Gish as a concept has been around since Githyanki Fighter / Mages showed up back in the AD&D days. Players have been trying to make useful ones for almost as long, and 3.X has had many ways to build them. The Magus is just the first decent (imo) "gish in a can" class. Pathfinder doesn't have a Player's Handbook.Alternatively Bloodrager is less complicated than the Magus classes, and does a similar sort of thing. Dex characters are a bit more tanky, Str characters are more damaging. Str characters are easier to build as they don't need a bunch of feats and specific weapons to function.
