The professorship honors one of UGA’s most legendary historians, who taught at UGA from 1919 until 1958, serving as chair of the department from 1940 until his retirement. Michael Winship's concern is with the interconnections between civil and ecclesiastical government, which are neglected, he says, because of the usual scholarly separation of church government from political history.
